After a tooth extraction or oral surgery, the patient should:
- Keep biting down firmly on the gauze placed between the teeth for 15 min.
- If the extraction was traumatic and lasted more than 15 min, take a painkiller (Auline 100mg, OKI 80mg 1-2 sachets every 8 hours), starting immediately after the procedure rather than waiting for the pain to begin.
- Immediately after the procedure, apply an ice pack over dry gauze on the outside of the mouth, over the treated area, alternating (20 min on + 20 min rest) for 4 hours after the procedure.
- On the second day after the procedure, do not apply any kind of compress.
- If the swelling persists, warm compresses can be applied from the third day to the skin over the treated area (outside the mouth), every 20 minutes.
- Have liquid and cold foods for the first 24 hours (lukewarm soups, milk, juices, water or ice cream).
- If surgery was performed in the mouth, continue this diet for more than one day.
- Keep up oral hygiene as well as possible, because good oral hygiene also helps wounds heal faster. Brush the teeth as normal, except in the treated area.
- Rinse the mouth with chamomile tea or with the antiseptics prescribed by the dentist for a few days, starting the day after the procedure, especially after meals, several times a day for 1 week.
- Return for a check-up after 1 week. If the wound was stitched, the stitches are removed after the 7th day. If you think something is wrong, contact the dentist at any time on the phone number below.
After a tooth extraction or oral surgery, the patient must not:
- Smoke for at least the first 12 hours after the procedure.
- Spit, suck on the wound, or have hot drinks or food.
- Talk a lot for 3-4 hours after the procedure.
- Chew the gauze placed in the mouth; it should simply be held under pressure between the teeth.
- Do physical exercise (gym, sports) for 12-24 hours after the procedure.
- Eat hard foods for the first 3-4 days after the procedure.
- Put Aspirin on the wound or rinse the mouth with alcohol if there is pain.
- Neglect the medication prescribed by the dentist in any way.
- Hesitate to contact the dentist if needed.
Caution: do not bite your lip or tongue while they are still numb.
